Chris Somers

Theology Teacher

Chris began his career at Newman as a Student Teaching assignment through Mount St. Clare College in 2000.  He graduated as a Bonaventure Scholar and Magna Cum Laude. At that time, Chris was not planning to remain at Newman, but he now admits he couldn't imagine himself teaching anywhere else.  Chris has a double license in education (both in the States of Illinois and Iowa) and he has received a Certificate of Completion from the Diocese of Rockford in the Catechists, both levels I and II.  He continues to keep this certificate updated with additional readings and seminars.  He is currently enrolled in a symposium through Notre Dame University called Science and Religion Initiative 2021.  He will be joined by Mrs. Verdick and Ms. Cook in representing Newman at a seminar in New Orleans in the summer of 2021.  Chris completed the training and certification of “Illinois School and Campus Safety Program” Spring 2018 at SVCC.  In addition, he completed the “Exodus 90” pilgrimage through the St. Patrick's Parish in Dixon December 2018.

Chris is currently teaching religion and has taken on the roles of Department Head of Theology, Director of Kairos and retreats, co-coordinator of concessions and football gate.
