Pre Calculus

"Neglect of mathematics works injury to all knowledge, since he who is ignorant of it cannot know the other sciences or the things of the world."

~ Roger Bacon

PRECALCULUS SYLLABUS

Precalculus is a college preparatory course covering higher level concepts in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.  In-coming students should review all Algebra III notes prior to the first class of the semester; a thorough knowledge of this material is assumed.

GRADING:

Homework:  25-30 problems per assignment; 1 or 2 points per problem.

Tests: 15 to 20 problems per test; 5 to 15 points per problem.  No notes of any kind are allowed during testing.  There are no re-tests.

Midterm and final:  25-30 problems per exam; 5 to 15 points per problem.

Notes:  1 point for each day of notes taken; these are to be turned in on the day of the test covering that material.

Extra Credit is available to those students who have completed their assigned work in a timely manner.  Extra credit consists of working more problems and is worth ¼  of the value of each homework problem.

ASSIGNMENTS

All homework must be completed on loose-leaf paper in pencil.

Label the assignment clearly with lesson and page number.

Work is to be done neatly with each step clearly shown.  If work is not shown or is difficult to read,  points will be deducted.

A loose-leaf three ring binder is suggested to keep notes, assignments and handouts.

If an assignment is one day late, 25% will be deducted; 2 days late, 50% will be deducted.  If an assignment is more than 2 days late, the student must meet with the instructor to establish a schedule for making up his or her assignments.

ABSENCES:

If a student is absent for any reason, he or she has one class period to make up any and all missed work, including exams.

Arrangements may be made on an individual basis for an extended illness.

CHEATING:

If a student is found to be in possession of any notes, identity sheets, a pre-programmed calculator or is observed copying from another person’s work or communicating in any way during a test, he or she will receive a zero for the test and will immediately be reported to Mr. Craft and Mrs. Hannan.

TEXTBOOKS:

Textbooks are to be covered at all times with a paper cover.

There will be no writing in the textbooks

Do not stuff papers, handouts, etc. in your textbooks.

The textbooks do not belong to you, and you are expected to respect the property of others.

CALCULATORS:

A TI 83 or TI 84 graphing calculator is recommended but not required.  These can be used on the ACT and SAT, and are required for most college level math classes.

Scientific calculators and the TI 89 may also be used.  A TI-89 calculator is recommended for students who may be planning on pursuing an engineering degree.

CLASSROOM RULES:

No student will be allowed to work on any course work other than math in this class.

Be in your seat and quiet at the bell.  Do not come to class late without a pass.

Follow all rules as outlined in the student handbook.  Do not enter my class unless your shirt is tucked in.

The possession of a cell phone, I-pod, or any other technological device, other than a calculator, will result in the confiscation of the device.

Come to class prepared; you will have textbook, pencil, paper, notebook, and eraser.  If you borrow an item from me and do not return it, you will receive a 0 for the day’s assignment.

Keep silent during tests until everyone has finished; your classmates deserve to be treated with the same courtesy and respect you would assume.

Common courtesy dictates that you do not speak while a classmate or the instructor is speaking.  You will treat your peers and the instructor with respect at all times.

Offensive language or behavior will not be tolerated.  You will be sent to Mr. Craft and will not enter the classroom again until an apology is extended to the entire class.

Respect the school and the instructor’s property.  Do not leave a mess in the classroom, or you will clean it up.  Do not damage things that do not belong to you, and return anything you borrow.

PARENTS:

Your student will have a lot of homework every class day; math is not a spectator sport.

Answers for all odd problems are in the back of the textbook.

I will be at school by 7:30 and in my room during homeroom on A days.

I will be happy to make arrangements to meet with students on B days.

Please contact me via e-mail if you have any questions or concerns.
