Powerful Libraries Make
Powerful Learners
The Study of Illinois School
Libraries Last year the findings of a major
study were released, showing how student
achievement is positively impacted by Illinois
School Libraries. The study, commissioned
by the Illinois School Library Media Association
and carried out by Keith Curry Lance of the
Library Research Service in Denver, Colorado,
demonstrated that “reading, writing,
and ACT scores rise when students have larger,
more current book collections and computers
connected to library databases and catalogs.” Lance’s
report sampled 661 Illinois schools, comparing
standardized test scores with the presence
of school libraries and school librarians.
